Q. Do I have to pay your travel and food costs?

No. I generally cover my own travel costs and buy my own food. Some homeowners leave the basics (bread, milk, tea, coffee) for me, or even kindly leave me something for my first dinner when I arrive, but this is not expected or required.

If I agree to house-sit and it will cost me a lot to travel there because it’s far from my current location, I might add extra to the quotation to cover travel costs, but this will be discussed with you at the quotation stage. Usually I won’t accept a house-sit if it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg to get there, as that won’t make sense financially for you, or me! 

Q. Who is responsible for the utility bills (lighting, heat, internet)?

You (the homeowner) are responsible for all the usual bills (gas, electric, internet, TV and council tax) while I am staying at your house UNLESS agreed otherwise in writing between us (i.e. for long-term housesits I might make a contribution or cover these costs). I should not be asked to cover any household costs. Some homeowners even leave a little cash strictly for any incidentals (running out of pet treats or food, for example).  

Q. What if there is an emergency while I am away?

Before you set off on, I will ask you to provide a list of emergency contacts (vet, out-of-hours vet, plumber, locksmith, etc) in case of an emergency. I will of course contact you to inform you of any issues with the home or pets, and do my best to deal with the emergency in hand while keeping you informed.
